In 1861 copper was discovered in Moonta and soon became the richest copper mines in Australia. Most of the mining was done by cornish miners recruited directly from Cornwall. Visit the Moonta Mines State Heritage Area and discover the history of the mining town, cornish cottages, artifacts and relics. Take a tour of Wheal Hughes Mine and see the cathedral like workings of a former mine.
